ARC Review: The Last Buzzer by J.J. Mulder

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The fifth book in the SCU Hockey series— available on Kindle and in paperback now! Back cover blurb included below for a full description.

I have written about my love for J.J. Mulder and the SCU Hockey series before. This latest book, “The Last Buzzer,” has only further cemented my fandom. She has left the series open-ended (great news for her hopeful fans). If this does end up being the last story though , what a great one to bookend a heartwarming & important series in the world of MM sports romance. Des and Jack are such easy characters to fall in love with, as is Des’s nephew, Parker. I haven’t seen gray-ace, demisexual, and aegosexual representation like this anywhere else, and that was so enjoyable and affirming to read. Their story was well worth the wait to get to Book Five.

There was a whole roller coaster of emotions I went through while reading this book— heartbreak, joy, amusement, and feeling deeply understood to name a few. I don’t think I’ve ever related to a character more than Jack when it comes to his anxiety (and the associated blushing) or his perspective on sex & relationships. Reading his inner monologues, I felt seen; and I think that’s one of the greatest things books can do for us— transport us to a world we would like to live in because of characters we love and understand.

“I don’t understand how meditation could possibly work for people. If I knew how to turn my thoughts off, I’d just do it all the time.”

-Jack

My other favorite part of this book is what’s been described as “soulmate level platonic friendship.” Nate’s love for Jack is so unconditional and sweet. He completely accepts him as he is—his Micky Mouse— while gently pushing him outside of his comfort zone. He was the first person to help heal Jack’s heart, and the first real friend he’s ever had. Nate’s golden retriever energy, affection, and loyalty are the best representation of the exact opposite of toxic masculinity, and we need more of it. Everyone needs a Nate!

“The Last Buzzer” will stay with me for a long time, and I just know it’s going to be a frequent reread. It’s a top book of 2025, and I need everyone to go read it!

“The truth is, all I’ve ever wanted or needed from a partner is a tender, quiet sort of love. Love that looks like this—helping with chores that aren’t his to do, and touching meant to soothe, nothing more.”

-Des
